Mapping archaeological sites, the study of prehispanic land use patterns in Oaxaca, and the analysis of prehispanic shell ornament production.

Linda M. Nicholas has participated in archaeological field research in Oaxaca, Mexico, for 20 years, working on regional settlement pattern projects in the Valley of Oaxaca and several smaller, neighboring valleys, intensive site surveys of hilltop terrace sites, and excavations of Classic period (A.D. 200-800) houses. She currently co-directs, with Dr. Gary Feinman, household excavations at El Palmillo, a large hilltop terrace site in the eastern Valley of Oaxaca.

In addition to her fieldwork in southern Mexico, she has participated in archaeological field research in Hawaii, Arizona, Texas, Wyoming, the Northwest Coast, and, since 1995, in Shandong, China.
