Changes in Peru’s political structure and pressures from extractive industries increasingly threaten forests with extraordinary biological and cultural value that do not yet enjoy legal protection. With new funds from the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, ECCo is partnering with Peruvian collaborators to ensure that the vast expanses of forests that have been inventoried and were once close to protection get legally categorized and have a strong system for long-term management. An early success of our collaboration was the declaration of Reserva Nacional Matsés (1,039,412 acres, inventoried in 2004) in August 2009. The new reserve, the size of Delaware, protects an almost complete representation of Loreto’s famous biodiversity, from white-sand forests laden with endemic species to stunningly diverse forests growing on rich clay soils. And the area shelters the hunting lands and livelihoods of the Matsés.
