1. Flower parts in twos; fruits with hooked bristles - Circaea
1. Flower parts in four or fives; fruits lacking hooked bristles - 2
2. Fruits indehiscent; flowers grouped on one side of inflorescence - 3
2. Fruits dehiscent; flowers evenly distributed on inflorescence - 4
3. Ovary eight-ribbed; hypanthium longer than the ovary - Stenosiphon
3. Ovary three- to four-ribbed; hypanthium as long as ovary - Gaura
4. Sepals persistent on fruit - Ludwigia
4. Sepals deciduous - 5
5. Flowers usually yellow; capsule fruits prismatic to winged; seeds without tuft of hairs at the end - 6
5. Flowers white to pink; capsules linear to elongate; seeds with tuft of hair at end - Epilobium
